When I found that Nobel laureate writer Orhan Pamuk had cited a Turkish saying in his acceptance lecture for the prize (2006) and likened writing to “digging a well with a needle”, I instantly fell in love with him. I do love writing and it is also irreducibly central to my professional identity, but at the same time it feels to me a lot like embroidery.
