Came across an interesting article in Telegraph this morning. (It is actually from yesterday’s edition)
Children’s favourite Thomas the Tank Engine has been attacked by a Canadian academic for its “conservative political ideology” and failure to adequately represent women.
This is by no means the first attempt to read between lines – or in this case between frames? – in Children’s animation. The Smurfs have long been ‘accused’ of promoting communism, and all Disney characters, from Snow White to Donald Duck, have always been subject to this kind of criticism.
Do you happen to be one of those who set out for politically correct parenting? I have an answer. Jane and the Dragon. I don’t think anyone can fault this lovely double act and their simple-minded friends. (p.s. If you did find any hidden messages that I have missed from this series, please don’t ruin it for me by letting me know.)
