Wouldn’t John Lennon have liked Facebook!

A couple of days ago, via Fabio’s feed, I came to know the Peace on Facebook project. The graphs captured below visualise how friendship connections on Facebook go beyond geographic, religious and political conflicts.

I am honestly unsure yet whether this seemingly increasing number of ‘connections’ formed across offline boundaries reflects an illusion or signals something more significant. Nevertheless, I found it quite interesting to see how Facebook itself now claims that it can achieve more than it originally set out to. I am not saying that it should or should not. It’s just that this project gave me the impression that when cases of user appropriation are identified, creators of Web services suddenly start to speak as if that’s what they have anticipated all along.

A bit dated, but I think the following piece on the satirical Onion encapsulates what I am trying to say here. Check out – Twitter Creator On Iran: ‘I Never Intended For Twitter To Be Useful’. 🙂

    • Thanks, and yes, that’s precisely why I have some reservations. In fact, I am writing another related post now. Watch this space! 😛
